Info for parents about Auditory Processing Disorder

I’m over at Chicago Parent sharing what parents need to know about Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).

Dr. Jennifer Gagesch of the Sertoma Speech and Hearing Center shared some info for parents about Auditory Processing Disorder :10790

* APD often occurs along with ADHD or ADD, as well as dyslexia and they all originate in the same area of the brain.

* A child’s auditory processing system is typically mature at age 12, on average. APD occurs in kids who are slower to mature but it will eventually happen. APD is not permanent.

* APD is controversial, but more and more audiologists and school officials accept that it exists and can improve with treatment. One option is the child wearing an FM system in a noisy classroom to be able to better focus on what the teacher is saying.
